We are a New York City open community interested in the commercialization of outer-space. Our slogan is:
An open community for the development of private companies commercializing space.
NewSpace NYC is a group that formed Friday Oct 17th 2014 at Columbia Startup Lab (at WeWork) where Sidney (@snnaka), a professor at Columbia U, reached out to members of the dormant Commercialization of Space Meetup group. We came together initially to enter the annual Columbia U entrepreneur competition. Since that first meeting things have been moving fast and we're now aiming to be the community in NYC around the private space industry. We already have a great team. @mikeumus is a member of Sol-X and PongSat Parts. Sean Auriti, founder of AlphaOneLabs is a member as well. Our current initiates are to build a open-source grounder receiver for Outernet and help them raise their 100k: http://funding.outernet.is/bring-outernet-to-the-entire-world
We're also going to help raise for Sean's "HackerT0wn:
http://www.hackert0wn.com/ from within HackerT0wn we'll become a Space Startup Incubator as the facilities will have space dedicated equipment that you'll see in the video on their homepage.
